Ecologically Critical Area : ウィキペディア英語版 | Ecologically Critical Area An Ecologically Critical Area (ECA) is an environmental protection zone in Bangladesh. In 1995, specific areas in Bangladesh could be deemed an Ecologically Critical Area as a result of the Environmental Conservation Act.〔Raising Awareness of the Sundarban Ecologically Critical Area, Bangladesh〕 Bangladesh has a wide variety of ecosystems that include over 300 rivers that creates both marine and fresh water environments.〔"Ecosystem in Bangladesh." The Sonadia Islands is home to some of the last mangrove forests that house distinct species that can tolerate the high salinity of the mangrove forests in this area.〔"Community based adaptation in the ecologically critical areas of Cox's Bazar – Teknaf Peninsula and Sonadia Island – through biodiversity conservation and social protection." IUCN. N.p., n.d. Web. 21 May 2013. .〕 The Sundarbans also contain mangrove forests and was named an ECA because it continues to suffer from over-exploitation and illegal urban development.〔"Raising Awareness of the Sundarban Ecologically Critical Area, Bangladesh." WFN. N.p., n.d. Web. 21 May 2013. .〕 St. Martin's Island is known for its coral-algal that overwhelms the rocky reefs of St. Martin's Island. The Island also is a refuge for globally threatened marine species. Finally, the Hakaluki Haor found in greater Sylhet is an ECA because it has an extensive amount of wetland habitats that support a wide variety of life.〔"Community based adaptation in the ecologically critical areas of Cox's Bazar – Teknaf Peninsula and Sonadia Island – through biodiversity conservation and social protection." IUCN. N.p., n.d. Web. 21 May 2013.〕 Gulshan-Baridhara Lake was declared an ECA in 2001.〔Md. Sohrab Ali, "(Gulshan Lake: An ecologically critical area )", ''The Daily Star'', 2007-10-19〕 In September 2009, the four rivers around the capital city Dhaka - Buriganga River, Shitalakshya River, Turag River and Balu River—have been declared by the Department of Environment as ECAs.〔Bangladesh Sangbad Shangstha Release,''(4 rivers around city declared ecologically critical area )'', The Daily Star'', 2009-12-25〕 ==References==
